Early in its design life, the MBX was also intended to be a standalone game console. I strongly suspect that this big space in the bottom was where the interface to add the hardware to do that as well as to provide some kind of a cartridge interface. It probably would have been some kind of stripped-down 99/4A–but as prices for game systems were in free fall at about the time they finished the initial development of the MBX portion of it, it no longer made economic sense to continue development on the rest.
